A profile pretending to be you

IT Rules 2021, Rule 3(2)(b) — impersonation is covered
Platforms must act on content that is “in the nature of impersonation in an electronic form, including artificially morphed images” after a complaint from you or someone on your behalf — no court order needed. The rule required action within 24 hours; the February 2026 amendment cut the window for this content to 2 hours.
IT Act §66C — identity theft
Fraudulently or dishonestly using another person's electronic signature, password, or any other unique identification feature is punishable with imprisonment up to three years and a fine up to one lakh rupees. Running an account on your stolen identity falls here.
IT Act §66D — cheating by personation
Using a computer resource to cheat by pretending to be someone else carries imprisonment up to three years and a fine up to one lakh rupees. This is the section police most often invoke for fake accounts used to defraud.
cybercrime.gov.in and 1930
India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal takes impersonation and financial-fraud complaints, including anonymously, and 1930 is the national helpline. The portal reports the crime; the platform report gets the account removed. Use both.
